Picture a society plagued by police brutality, hyper-surveillance, wealth inequality, sexual violence, lying politicians, imperialism, environmental degradation, and the threat of scientific experimentation on citizens. Is this a fictional dystopian wasteland set in the far-off future, or our very own world? Dystopian literature has the ability to hold a mirror to our society and point out the ugliest parts, perhaps the parts we don't like to look at. Dystopian societies shine a light on the most shameful issues in our own society by taking those issues and amplifying them tenfold.
With this project, I chose one societal issue from each of the eight novels we've read that I believe to be an exaggeration or a dystopian continuation of an issue in our present-day society. For each topic, I hope to show how we could conceivably get from point A to point B, with point B being a dystopian hellhole. I'm essentially using this project to underscore the many dystopian qualities in our own world.
